The Monitoring the Future (MTF) project, begun in 1975, tracks changes in the beliefs, attitudes, and behavior of young people in the United States. It repeats surveys of same segments of the population (8th, 10th, and 12th graders; college students; and young adults) with the same set of questions over a period of years to see how answers change over time. Monitoring the Future has been funded under a series of competing, investigator-initiated research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (CAS) is an ongoing survey of over 14,000 students at 120 four-year colleges in 40 states. The CAS study examines high-risk behaviors among college students, such as heavy episodic or binge drinking, smoking, illicit drug use, gun possession, violence, and other behavioral, social, and health problems confronting today's American college students.
